01The Arc

Sons and Daughters formed in Glasgow in the early 2000s and released four studio albums between 2004 and 2011. That is a tight, coherent body of work — short enough to hold in your head all at once, substantial enough to repay close listening. The run has a real shape to it: a beginning that already sounded like the finished article, a middle that pushed the sound to its hardest and then its most polished, and an end that moved somewhere colder and more deliberate.

Love the Cup arrived in 2004 and announced the band immediately — the twin vocals, the trebly guitars, the rhythms that drove rather than decorated. It felt raw without being unfinished. The Repulsion Box followed in 2005 and tightened everything: faster, more compressed, the energy barely contained. Those two records came close together and feel like a pair, the same instincts pushed to different pressures.

Then a longer gap before This Gift in 2008, and with it a bigger production and a cleaner sound. Some of the roughness was traded for ambition, and whether that trade worked is where listener opinion tends to split. Mirror Mirror came in 2011 and settled the argument by moving somewhere else entirely — atmospheric, mechanical, the most interior thing they made. It sounds like a deliberate closing statement.

The four records together cover seven years during which the band moved through four distinct registers without losing the essential thing: the interlocking male and female vocals, the commitment to forward momentum, and a songwriting sensibility that drew on post-punk and country in equal measure. No record sounds like a drift or an accident. Each one adds something to the shape of the whole.

For a catalogue this focused, that is no small achievement.
